Bone and Joint Unit
Welcome to the SVUH Bone and Joint Unit
The Bone & Joint Unit comprises of specialities of Orthopaedic Surgery, Rheumatology and of Rehabilitation Medicine and is the only such unit in Ireland. The mission of the Bone & Joint Unit is four-fold:
- To provide an evidence-based, multidisciplinary care programme to all patients presenting to SVHG with Musculoskeletal, Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation related problems
- By linking closely with community care services, to devise programmes of patient management, which are designed to offer speedy access, early intervention and discharge back to the community where appropriate.
- By co-ordinating teaching programmes to provide a unique educational environment for medical undergraduates, postgraduate trainees and for nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists wishing to develop specialist musculoskeletal expertise.
- Again by promoting interdisciplinary cooperation to further develop and expand the academic and research infrastructure relating to musculoskeletal disease.
The underlying objective of the Bone & Joint Unit is to provide patients with rheumatic disease in as much as possible with a “one-stop-shop” whereby they can have their condition assessed, investigated and treated according to best clinical practice and with maximal efficiency.
It is important to remember that the SVHG Bone & Joint Unit is the pivotal member of a network, which includes the following institutions:
- St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown
- Our Lady’s Orthopaedic Hospital in Cappagh
- Rheumatology Rehabilitation unit in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross
- Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin
- National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire
- Primary Community & Continuing Care Services
- University College Dublin
Together with all of the above institutions, a network of coordinated service provision for patients with musculoskeletal disease is being developed. Any consultant appointments are shared across some of the above sites and further coordination across these sites is being considered.
There are 4 hospital departments associated with the Bone & Joint Unit, with:
- 6 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons. Mr Dudeney, Mr Kelly, Mr Quinlan, Mr.O Rourke, Mr O ‘Toole, Mr Hurson
- 4 Consultant Rheumatologists. Prof. FitzGerald, Prof. Veale, Dr Mongey (locum),Dr Killeen
- Consultant Endocrinologist (with a special interest in diseases of bone) Dr Mc Kenna
- 2 Consultant Rehabilitation medicine specialists. Dr Ryall, Dr Carroll
