Chaplaincy/Pastoral Care Department

Chaplaincy

Introduction

The Chaplaincy department like every other department within the hospital represents a very specific and professional discipline. We work with other healthcare professionals in providing a holistic service that is geared to total patient care and ministry to families. We are an ecumenical team of chaplains and chaplain-interns.   We provide and co-ordinate spiritual and pastoral care and we respond to the sacramental and ritual needs of patients, families and staff.

Clinical Pastoral Education is an integral part of the Chaplaincy department. This is an experience based, graduate level, chaplain internship programme for persons who have completed their academic theological studies and are preparing for ministry. The programme is accredited by the Healthcare Chaplaincy Board, and is a requirement for those who wish to be considered for certification in healthcare chaplaincy within the Irish healthcare system. The department offers three intensive units of clinical pastoral education each year.

Hours of Service

Chaplains are available in the hospital during office hours and are assigned to specific services. A priest-chaplain is available on pager 478 at all times. The sacrament of the sick and reconciliation are available on request. Ministers of Holy Communion/Chaplains distribute Holy Communion regularly throughout the hospital.   Holy Communion is also available to patients on request.

Clinical Pastoral Education

The Clinical Pastoral Education Programme is an integral part of the Chaplaincy Department. The Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (Ireland) Ltd. and the Healthcare Chaplaincy Board accredit the programme.
