Biochemistry

Clinical Biochemistry is concerned with the measurement of the chemical constituents (ranging from ions to complex proteins) of body fluids, for use not only in diagnosis of disease, but also in monitoring the course of disease, the effect of treatment, prognosis and screening. The Biochemistry Department provides diagnostic and monitoring support to a wide range of services, including the Liver Unit, Liver Transplant Programme, Cardiovascular, Oncology and Renal Services.

The blood transfusion laboratory manages the blood and blood product supply for the hospital. It performs all of the required pre-transfusion testing to ensure safe and compatible transfusions. Specialised serological investigations are also carried out as required. The laboratory co-operates with other hospitals in the region to optimise blood usage.
The cryobiology section of the laboratory processes and stores peripheral blood stem cells and bone marrow. The laboratory is actively involved in the hospital's haemovigilance network.

The Endocrine Laboratory is a recognised centre of excellence in the area of steroid and peptide hormone analysis. It provides a local, regional and national service for measurement and monitoring of these hormones.

The Haematology Laboratory provides a comprehensive range of laboratory tests and clinical support for the management of haematology disorders, including leukaemia. It provides an oral anticoagulant monitoring service on a daily basis. The laboratory is the referral centre in the region for immunophenotyping, thrombophilia screening and other bleeding disorders.

The Histopathology Laboratory provides a diagnostic and consultative service to clinicians and patients on a wide range of tissues received. It acts as a tertiary referral centre for various hospitals throughout the country. Specialised services are provided for liver disease (including liver transplantation), breast, colorectal, lung, prostatic cancer, and renal and skin diseases. An extensive immunochemistry and direct immunofluorescence service is provided. The Cytopathology service is exclusively non-gynaecological. An Autopsy service is provided to the hospital and to the Dublin City Coroner.

The Immunology Laboratory provides the following services:
- Assists in the investigation of patients with a variety of autoimmune disease, e.g. the wide spectrum of rheumatoid, liver and renal diseases
- Screens for a specific IgE reaction to a number of common allergens
- Monitors immunosuppression of patients on Cyclosporine and Tacrolimus.

The Metabolism Laboratory provides a comprehensive analytical and consultation service in the specialist area of metabolic bone and renal disease.As well as providing a local and regional service,the laboratory acts as a national referral centre.

Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine Laboratory performs specialised biochemical tests involving immunoassay. These tests include tumour markers, thyroid function tests, vitamins such as Folate and Vitamin B12 and therapeutic drugs such as Digoxin.
