Pharmacy Department

The Pharmacy Department provides a comprehensive range of pharmaceutical services to patients and staff in SVUH. Our principal objective is to provide patient-focused pharmaceutical care in order to achieve definite outcomes that improve patients’ quality of life. The pharmacy service has developed over the last ten years, reflecting international developments in pharmacy practice, and in response to the needs of this organisation. The department has a skill mix of pharmacists, pharmaceutical technicians, pharmacy aides, administrative staff and porters.

SVUH is a teaching hospital affiliated to University College Dublin. There is a strong commitment to research and education within the hospital. Pharmacists and technicians are involved in supporting ongoing research projects, in particular clinical research in oncology. Pharmacists are also involved in providing lectures, presentations and workshops for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare personnel in SVUH, in clinical training of undergraduate pharmacy students, Higher Diplomas for Nursing, MSc in Clinical Pharmacy (University of Aberdeen) and in the MSc in Hospital Pharmacy in Trinity College Dublin.

The main strands of the pharmacy service are:

Dispensary service

This incorporates medicines procurement and management, distribution of medicines to clinical areas, non-aseptic (extemporaneous) compounding and dispensing services for patients on discharge and for outpatients.

Clinical service

A clinical pharmacy service is provided throughout the hospital. Clinical pharmacists have a key role in monitoring and reviewing patients and prescriptions, providing medication counselling and liaising with community pharmacists to ensure seamless pharmaceutical care. Clinical pharmacists work closely with other members of multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that patients receive optimal pharmaceutical care while they are attending the hospital.

Medicines Information (MI)

The Medicines Information service (MI) strives to optimise patient care through the provision of accurate, up-to-date, unbiased information on medication use to health care professionals within the organisation. MI can be contacted via telephone on ext. 4139, via your clinical pharmacist or technician. The MI service is open for enquiries during pharmacy hours.

Aseptic service

SVUH has a busy oncology /haematology service. The pharmacy has a state of the art Aseptic Unit (ASU) where all the chemotherapy for patients in the hospital is prepared under sterile conditions. The ASU is also involved in the preparation of products for ENT, transplant patients, Interventional Radiology, Urology and other customers.
