The Clinic is located near St. Mark’s ward, first floor on the corridor linking the old and new hospital, ext 4570.
It is open Monday-Thursday s, 11am –6pm.
Traditionally, patients were admitted to hospital a few days prior to surgery for their workup and pending the results, other clinicians/disciplines input were often required. This often led to delay or cancellation of their operation. Pre-op assessment aims to have the patient as fit as possible for surgery by having their complete workup done as an outpatient. To date 17-20% of surgeries went ahead with the help of this clinic some of which could have led to cancellations if the patient were an in-patient.
The overall aims of Pre assessment are to
Ø Enhance the efficacy and clinical excellence of patient care
Ø Reduce and prevent cancellations by having the patients assessed by the anaesthetist prior to admission, providing an opportunity to identify other health issues and facilitating prompt treatment of any medical problems.
Ø Reduce bed occupancy and length of hospital stay, thus reducing costs
Ø Reduce the number of patients who fail to attend for surgery
Ø Increase the efficient use of operating theatre time
Ø To facilitate informed consent.
Ø Improve safety by assessing and quantifying risk, and allaying fear and anxiety
Ø Improve patient education.
