What Services We Provide

 The Psycho-oncology services offers:

·        Individual Psychotherapy

·        Individual Psychological Support

·        Group Therapy

 In addition the service provides the following programmes:

 Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

 Course Facilitated by: ·        Dr. Paul D’Alton, Senior Clinical Psychologist

This course is offered to cancer patients as a means of coping with cancer. It aims to introduce relaxation exercises, gentle body movements and cognitive therapy to help calm the anxious mind, provide skills to live with greater peace of mind and enhance ability to live in the present. It is an eight-week program once a week for two hours. 12-20 participants

Who can participate:

MBCT is open to all cancer patients at SVUH regardless of diagnosis. It is particularly suitable for patients who have previous experience of relaxation/ meditation/ yoga/ stress management. It is best suited to patients at the end of their medical treatment.

Stress Management Group (SMG)

Course Facilitated by: ·        Allison McGrann, Counselling Psychologist

 Stress Management is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It will help cancer patients to find new ways of coping and teach a number of relaxation techniques. This course takes place on a weekly basis for two hours over six weeks. 10-15 participants

Who can participate:

SMG is open to all cancer patients at SVUH regardless of diagnosis.

 Complementary Therapy:

Therapies provided by: ·        Mary Moriarty

 The aim of complementary therapy is to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, relieve stress related symptoms and treatment related symptoms. The therapies offered are: Aromatherapy massage, Massage and Reflexology. Patients must have the consent of their consultant before receiving complementary therapies.

 Who can participate?

Inpatients deemed appropriate by the Psycho-oncology team. A limited outpatient service is also available.
