Participate in all decisions about your treatment. The healthcare team is working for you.

  • You should be informed and agree on exactly what will be done during each step of your care.
  • Know how long the treatment will last and how you should feel.
  • Understand that more tests or medications may not always be better.
  • If you are unsure about the nature of your illness ask questions.
  • Keep a record of your medical history and share it with your healthcare team.
  • Ask for the name of support groups related to your illness.
  • Don't be afraid to seek a second opinion if you are unsure about the nature of your illness and the best treatment.

Make sure you get the results of any test or procedure

If you don't get the results when expectes, don't simply assume 'no news is good news'. Call your doctor to find out your results and ask what they mean for your care.
