Department of Ophthalmology


The current few consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at St. Vincent's University Hospital are Mr. Peter Barry and Mr. William Power and Mr. Mark Cahill is consultant at St. Michael's Hospital, Dun Laoghaire.

Ms. Elizabeth Chaco is performing a long term locum for Dr. Geraldine Kelly whose replacement is expected in 2007.

All consultants have a commitment to the Eye and Ear Hospital additionally.

The St. Vincent's University Hospital Department of Ophthalmology specialises in the delivery of cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation to the very elderly. Most of these patients are referred from the Department of Geriatrics and the anaesthesia for their surgery has become sophisticated, safe and effective.

Cornel grafting is a particular interest of William Powers and Mr. Barry has a particular interest in vitreoretinal surgery, which he performs at the Eye and Ear Hospital.

The department at St. Vincent's concentrates on laser photocoagulation of diabetic eye disease, treatment of glaucoma and provides an in-house consultation service to the hospital in the context of ophthalmological manifestations of a systemic disease.

The department is currently reviewing its activities and is looking to expand its non-surgical services in medical retina with the provision of fundus Fluorescein angiography on sit, Yag laser services on site and will further investigate the logistics of providing on site assessment and treatment of age related macular degeneration. In this regard the 4 integrated hospitals will work closely together i.e. St. Vincent's University Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, St. Columcilles Hospital in Loughlinstown and the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Adelaide Road.

St. Vincent' University Hospital will shortly develop a "one stop shop" for cataract surgery. Like the diabetic and glaucoma patients these will be seen in the daycare unit rather than outpatients and, if considered suitable for cataract surgery, will have the relevant tests done immediately and a decision made as to whether inpatient or daycare facilities are required.
