There is a full time senior occupational therapist (OT) and half-time rotational basic grade occupational therapist dedicated to the rheumatology service at SVUH. 

Rheumatology Staffing : 1 Senior and 0.5 staff grade rotational

Both in- and outpatients are assessed and treated, following referral by the rheumatology consultants. 

Services provided include: upper limb splinting, education and advice regarding joint protection, energy conservation and pacing activities. Occupational therapy within this area also includes promotion and maintenance of independence through advice about equipment and minor adaptations, referral to community occupational therapy services, and back care information. 

The senior OT also attends a monthly young adolescent clinic, assessing young people in transition between child and adult rheumatology services, and a weekly group is run for individuals with fibromyalgia to enable them to learn coping strategies to manage their condition. 

In addition, a foot clinic is run fortnightly for comprehensive foot assessment, and provision of custom-made insoles, orthotic devices and orthopaedic shoes.
