Aim of the Respiratory Nurse telephone advice line service

The purpose of this service is to offer advise and support for patients with lung conditions attending St. Vincent's University Hospital.

The advise line is not an emergency service.

If you require urgent medical advise you must contact your GP surgery or attend your local Accident and Emergency Department.

When should you call the advice line?

  • If you have concerns about your symptoms or management that need to be addressed before your next out patient appointment.
  • If you are experiencing difficulty with any equipment you use at home to manage your lung condition.
  • If you are experiencing any side effects that you feel may be caused by the medication prescribed fo your lung condition.

how does the advise line work?

The advise line is an answerphone service provided Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

Please leave the following information on the answer phone:

  • Your full name
  • Your hospital record number or date of birth.
  • Contact telephone number(s).
  • The reason for your call.

A respiratory nurse specialist will reply to your message on return to the office. If you are out when the nurse returns your call, tow further attempts will be made to contact you. If you do not hear back from the nurse by 4pm please contact the advice line the next day.

Who is the advice line designed to help?

The advice line is available to any patients who attend any consultant within the St. Vincent's University Hospital group. Family members may also call on your behalf as long as they have your permission to do so. However confidential issues will only be discussed with you. Your GP, other health care professionals, Community Care Area Officers and equipment suppliers may also contact the advice line.
