St. Vincent’s University Hospital launches new cancer care handbook for patients and families

24th June 2026

St. Vincent’s University Hospital has launched a new patient handbook to support people receiving cancer care at St. Vincent’s UCD Cancer Centre.

The Centre is a partnership between St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group and University College Dublin, bringing together cancer services and expertise across St. Vincent’s University Hospital and St. Vincent’s Private Hospital with UCD’s research, education and academic strength.

A Helping Handbook: Your Cancer Care Guide at St. Vincent’s University Hospital was developed by Allied Health and Social Care Professionals working in cancer care, with input from colleagues across the wider multidisciplinary team.

The handbook brings together practical, reliable information to help patients and families feel more supported, informed and prepared throughout treatment and recovery.

It includes an introduction to the cancer care service, information on the different staff patients may meet and practical tips on living well during cancer treatment, including eating well, staying active, sleeping well, accepting help and staying connected with others.

The guide also provides an A–Z of common symptoms and issues patients may experience during treatment, including fatigue, appetite changes, brain fog, body changes, infection risk, pain, lymphoedema, mouth changes, nausea, taste changes, peripheral neuropathy, sexuality and fertility.

Practical supports are also covered, including home care packages, Meals on Wheels, assisted decision-making, future planning and useful contact details for patients attending St. Anne’s Ward, St. Anne’s Day Centre, the triage service and outpatient services.

The handbook also includes a myth-busting section, addressing common questions around medical cards, sugar, dairy, fasting, supplements and alternative diets, as well as a list of trusted resources and community cancer support services.

Liz Barnes, Cancer Care Directorate HSCP representative at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, said:

“People can feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they receive after a cancer diagnosis. This handbook was developed by Allied Health and Social Care Professionals to bring practical, reliable guidance together in one place.

It reflects the questions patients and families ask us every day — how to manage symptoms, stay active, eat well, cope with fatigue and emotional strain, and know where to turn for support.

Our hope is that it helps patients feel more informed, more prepared and less alone throughout their care.”

The handbook is available to patients attending cancer services at St. Vincent’s University Hospital. Patients are encouraged to speak with their cancer care team if they have questions or need additional support.
