St. Vincent’s University Hospital Emergency Department introduces “Period Dignity” initiative to help combat Period Poverty

9th May 2024

SVUH is proud to announce the launch of the “Period Dignity” initiative in its Emergency Department, aimed at addressing the pressing issue of period poverty within the community.

Period poverty, the inability to afford or access suitable period products, affects countless individuals globally. Recognising the importance of addressing this challenge, SVUH is taking proactive steps to ensure that all patients in its Emergency Department (ED) have access to essential menstrual hygiene.

Through the “Period Dignity” initiative, the ED will provide free tampons and sanitary towels to patients in need. These items will be made available through the efforts of the hospital’s Social Inclusion Team, facilitated by the Emergency Department Social Workers.

Ciara Lumsden, Senior Medical Social Worker, emphasised the significance of this milestone: “Providing access to menstrual hygiene products goes beyond just providing essentials; it’s a fundamental affirmation of dignity and a cornerstone of holistic care. We’re excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on the well-being of our patients.”

SVUH is committed to promoting equity, inclusivity, and compassionate care for all its patients. The introduction of the “Period Dignity” initiative underscores this commitment and represents a crucial step towards addressing period poverty within our community.
