The Endocrine Group provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service for patients referred for investigation of a wide range of conditions including:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Gonadal Disorders
  • Adrenal Disorders
  • Calcium and Bone Disorders
  • Pituitary Disease
  • Pancreatic Disorders including hypocalcaemia
  • Obesity

The Diabetes Service, based in the newly open very fine Diabetes Centre has its own distinct cohort of nurse specialists, dietician and secretarial staff. This year the Centre successfully initiated an internationally recognised structured intensive education system for people with type 1 diabetes, the "Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE)" programme.

The Endocrine Laboratory provides measurement of a wide range of steroid hormones, glycoproteins, haemoglobin A1c, insulin, insulin-like growth factor, sex hormone binding globulin. The laboratory has pioneered the routine screening of hyperprolactinaemic sera for macroprolactin world-wide. The Endocrine Team provides a regional/national service for the investigation of complex disorders of the reproductive endocrine system and of the adrenal cortex. The investigation of hypoglycaemia in collaboration with the Radiology Department has been developed to provide a national referral service.
