SVUH Cystic Fibrosis Centre

The Department of Respiratory Medicine provides expert services in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic respiratory disorders.

Our department manages a diverse range of conditions including asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung cancer, respiratory infections (including tuberculosis), cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, occupational lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep-related breathing disorders, in addition to acute and chronic respiratory failure.

We have well-established national referral centres for interstitial lung disease; sleep-disordered breathing and the National Referral Centre for Adult Cystic Fibrosis. We are one of eight designated cancer centres under the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), where we provide lung cancer expertise for the region.

We also have close referral links with respiratory colleagues throughout the Dublin Academic Medical Centre and the Ireland East Hospital Group.

  • Pulmonary function and sleep laboratories, recently appointed Director of Sleep Laboratory: Dr. John Garvey
  • Cystic fibrosis services including recent purpose-built inpatient/day ward facilities
  • Lung cancer services including bronchoscopy, thoracic ultrasound and EBUS
  • Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings for interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis and lung cancer
  • COPD outreach programme including pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Dedicated outpatient clinics for general respiratory, rapid-access lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, sleep disordered breathing, TB, difficult asthma and COPD
  • Respiratory research across a wide range of disciplines, and structured training programme for respiratory Trainee-Physicians
  • Nurse-led clinic for asthma and COPD patients

Referral information

We accept consultant and GP referrals to our administration offices and outpatient department in Suite 5, Herbert Wing by post, fax and electronically.  All letters are triaged by the relevant consultant and appointments made as appropriate

For pulmonary function testing, we also accept direct referrals from GPs, Wexford General Hospital, St. Columcille’s Hospital and Rheumatic & Muscular Disease Unit, Harold’s Cross.

The National Referral Centre for Adult Cystic Fibrosis is located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the Nutley Wing at St. Vincent’s University Hospital.
