The Emergency Department
The Emergency Department at St. Vincent’s University Hospital is the major trauma centre for the South East Dublin region, serving a population of over 300,000 and treating over 71,000 emergency attendances every year.
Our consultant-led teams provide a 24/7 service, diagnosing and managing acute and urgent illnesses and caring for medical and surgical emergencies for patients aged 16 years and older.
As the primary referral centre in the region, we receive patients from other hospitals directly to our Emergency Department for specific conditions such as stroke and major trauma, so they can receive specialist care from our team.
Our size, multidisciplinary skills and expertise in emergency medicine enable us to provide a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research opportunities to students and newly qualified doctors from Ireland and overseas.
Viral respiratory illness
If you have symptoms of a viral respiratory illness such as cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties or a high temperature, please consider wearing a mask on arrival to protect other patients.
Self-care advice for viral respiratory illnesses is available from the HSE website: Respiratory tract infections: symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatments.
Your GP may also be able to provide telephone advice if you would prefer not to attend the Emergency Department.
