Nursing Careers

Following completion of their Bachelor Degree in Nursing and registration with NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland), many graduates choose to spend at least their first year developing insight into the variety of clinical specialties.  This time spent gaining experience and being part of a clinical team is invaluable in ultimately determining what direction their career may take.

Career progression is dependent on a mix of further study and work experience and there are a number of specialist courses and programmes available in Ireland.

There are three career pathways available for nurses:

1. Clinical Practice

Post-graduate Diploma and Masters programmes across a range of specialties which will enable you to develop the requisite knowledge and skills to practice at the level of Clinical Nurse Specialist or Advanced Nurse Practitioner are also available

2. Management

There is a variety of courses available for nurses who – following time spent gaining clinical bedside experience –  may wish to go on and pursue a career in management.

3. Research/Education

St. Vincent’s University Hospital values education and development of each nurse. There are numerous roles within education and support within the hospital.

There are many opportunities for nurses in the area of research at St. Vincent’s University Hospital and we recognise the important role that research plays in the health sciences – which has increased the potential for nurses to become principal investigators and leaders in the field.  There are also a number of nursing professorial appointments within the hospital.
